![]() ![]() That it was just a big, dopey, okay action movie is in no way aligned with the massive hatred that was dumped on it -even by people who never even saw the film. The result of all of this is that the world was primed for a flop -and people were ready to shoot this movie down and pick it apart the moment it appeared. Water World is one of the first major, long anticipated movies that had its release overshadowed by endless stories detailing its purported "troubles" during production: How it was running wildly over budget, how people involved in the production were bitching, how the main set was destroyed by a hurricane, how test screenings weren't going well, how the producers were covering their asses by talking out against Costner.-which all combined with how the press was writing lots of stories about Costner's hubris and self-righteousness, which was part of the typical "backlash" syndrome we now see all the time whenever someone seems to be riding too high on his previous successes, and attempts a huge vanity project. ![]() This is sort of an interesting watershed moment in the relationship between movies and their perceived audience. ![]()
